A Dialogue with Civilization: Discovering Warring States History in a Pottery Incense Burner

When a ray of smoke escapes from the strings of the Gatao fume stove in the war country, spanning two thousand years, the ancient Yellow Land is telling us a civilization epic about life, faith and aesthetics.

War of the Worlds

The 13cm tall pottery fume oven is small but ingenious. The lid is filled with staggered strings, which both control the direction of flue gas and form the original cosmic view of the celestial place.

This piece is a picture of life in the Yellow River Valley during the Warring States era. Unlike the luxury of bronze fume furnaces in Central Plains, the choice of crude ceramic material implies folk wisdom – the earth made from local clay was fired at 800°C above to ensure heat resistance and reduced production costs.

Transmutation of Civilizations

The diamond-shaped emblazoned prints and triangular markings on the surface of the fumigator form a typical geometric decorative language in the middle of the war. The seemingly easy-going characterization is profound: the sharp angle triangle symbolises the sharp edge of the weapon, mapping the undertone color of the era of the conquest of the princes;

In contrast to the artifacts unearthed at the same time, the texture system of the pottery furnace presents a unique transitional feature. The radial string pattern on the top of the cover remains abstract deformation of bronze ware in spring and autumn, while the mesh treatment of the belly has been emerging as the rudimentary shape of Qin Hanyun's air pattern.

The Smell Code: Engraved into Civilization

The distribution of smoke on the inside of the stove cover restores the sanitary habits of ancient people "three days a day, five days a smoky" and the concept of "aroma avoidance" in the Huang Di Sutra.

During the war, the incense culture of the Yellow River Basin has formed a complete system. The design of this pottery fume contains Eastern wisdom: the dome-shaped lid symbolizes the celestial circle, the drum belly shape represents the place, and the air hole distribution corresponds to the star arrangement.

Space-time dialogue in the Yellow Land

This digital technology not only recreates the scenes of the war, but also activates the emotional connection between objects and contemporary people. Just as the Yellow River cuts through its thousands of gullies in the Yellow Earth Plateau, this pottery fume is etched into the path of civilization in time.
