When the University Meets the Great River

When the University Meets the Great River

By Zhuang Xichun

It is said that the best way to understand a river is to visit a museum that preserves its story, while the best way to bring its contemporary value to life is to enter a university that studies it.

One morning, I woke to the news that the Shaanxi Yellow River Culture Museum and Yulin University had formally inaugurated their jointly established Yellow River Culture Research Center. It was an inspiring encounter: an ancient river and the energy of young minds reaching out to one another.

For Yulin University, academic research rooted in this loess landscape now has a firm foundation. The Yellow River is no longer an abstract curve on a map; it is embodied in pottery fragments, towing ropes and old photographs within reach at the museum. Scholarship has put down roots in the river’s sediment.

For the Shaanxi Yellow River Culture Museum, artifacts shaped by thousands of years of history now have new interpreters. The university’s research will give these silent witnesses richer scholarly readings, making the river’s stories both moving and more profound. The echoes of history will resonate more clearly.

Here in Yulin, a land of grandeur and deep historical roots, the Yellow River flows day and night, just as cultural traditions continue unbroken. May this new research center become a light for Yellow River civilization, illuminating the past and inspiring the future.

Our best wishes to the Yellow River and to Yulin!
